As gardeners, when we put our young, tender plants into the soil we know that at some point in their lives they will have to withstand harsh weather. Of course, we hope that there isn't any freak hailstorms, snow storms, wind storms or a week straight of rain. I learned from our recent hail storms and snow in May that these things can happen. This little plant was inside in a nice little environment with warm water and sunshine and he's living his little plant life. He starts to grow a little and now it's time for him to move onto the next phase called living outside. He's loving this right? He's got real sunlight and a nice breeze and BAM! Freak snowstorm! He's probably sitting there wondering if he can make it through? Why is this happening to him?
After the snowstorm, I went out to the garden to assess the damage. I was scared to look. The plants looked a little droopy and sad but hey they were still alive. The plant that made it through that storm is a much more hardy than one that didn't have to endure the storm. Some vegetables can even be sweetened by a little frost even though they don't like being that cold. After the big snowstorm, the forecast was smooth sailing and good times up ahead. I looked at my little sad plants wishing they knew what I knew. They were going to be okay. They were going to be better than ok.
What I learned is that sometimes we go through impossible circumstances in life and we want to give up or we want to know why me. Whether it be a grief, or financial worries or relationship struggles- we don't know when the hard part will be over, what the outcome will be and we don't know how we will make it through. We can't see our 7 day forecast but God can and I can imagine Him saying " Just hang on a little while longer- have faith." I know that when I have dealt with a tough issue or difficult circumstance that even though it seemed devastating I made it to the other side and was better for it.
I'm hardy and sweetened by it.
