It seems like no matter what I'm cooking I'm always chopping up an onion for the recipe. I thought growing onions would be awesome and smart. So even though I only ever buy yellow onions I decided to plant white, yellow and red onions for fun. I prefer Vidalia onions when I can find them. They always remind me of my family in Georgia and somehow I feel closer to them. Anyway, I bought onion sets from Home Depot and planted them and decided to give it a go. I planted them in February and placed them under grow lights. All I did was add water every morning. Pretty soon I began to see little green shoots emerge. However, I did have some issues with the red onion. The bulbs never grew shoots and they rotted. I'm still not sure what happened there.
Early April, I transplanted the little onions outside and planted them in the tires. I am diligent about weeding and water them as needed. They are pretty low maintenance. My adorable niece was kind enough to sit and take a picture with my white onions. I have read that once that tops fall over and the leaves turn yellow that you should stop watering for a week to allow the onions to dry out then harvest them. They can be stored in a cold area for quite some time. I'll keep you posted come harvest time.
