I have to make the most of my garden space so to be effective I like to grow what I can vertically. Vertical gardening is great for vine variety squash, melons and cucumbers. I needed specific trellis sizes that I just couldn't find at the store so I built it. It also much cheaper to make it yourself. The bonus of using trellis is that it makes watering so much easier. Since you don't want to water squash from overhead, you have to hunt for the base and water from below. When the vines are all trellised watering becomes a cinch.

For this project you will need:
- 2 feet by 5 feet of welded wire
- Bolt cutters for 14 gauge wire
- Heavy duty staple gun and T50 staples
- 3 five foot wooden garden stakes
- Hand Saw
- Measure out the dimensions of wire that you want. This is great because you can customize the size of your trellis.
- Lay your stakes underneath the wire and position them where you want them.
- Staple the wire to the stakes.
- Snip off any extra pointy bits.
Here is the completed trellis. The stakes at the bottom sink into the dirt about 7 inches.
The store bought plants come with markers. Those markers tend to get lost at the base of the vine once it gets growing. I stapled the markers to the top of the trellis where the vine will eventually grow so that I can easily identify which vine it is. After awhile the spaghetti, acorn, pumpkin and butternut squash vines all look the same especially before they make fruit.
