I learned last season that green beans do best when they are planted directly into the garden when the soil is warm enough for them which is around 70 degrees. I direct sowed 2 varieties of green beans just to see which one I liked better. I planted Burpee Brand Organic Provider Garden Bean and Ferry~Morse Blue Lake 274 bush bean. Both beans need 55 days until harvest. They are a bush bean variety and should grow to approximately 18 inches high. When planting the green beans you put them at least an inch under the dirt. Keep the ground moist in order for seeds to germinate. Within a 7-14 days, your green bean sprouts will be peeking though the dirt. I noticed that green beans grow fairly quickly. Once the true leaves were established on my plant, they were eaten by some pest. I sprayed my plants with a tonic of baby shampoo and water and whatever was eating the plants have gone.
Tip: Do not handle green bean plants when they are wet as you can easily transfer plant diseases.
Strolling through the garden this morning I saw that some of the green beans have little purple flowers blooming. We know what that means!!! After flowers come fruit so green beans are on the way!
It has only been two days since I created this pos showing off the purple flowers and the green beans are already growing! Check it out!
